Venice host the future of energy from biomass and waste

Venice Symposium Brings Together International Researchers, Industry Experts and Policymakers to Discuss Technologies, Strategies and the Future of Energy Recovery

Scientific papers, posters and workshop proposals can be submitted until 3 September 2026 for the 11th International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste, taking place in Venice from 23 to 25 November 2026.

The energy transition also depends on our ability to rethink what is currently regarded as waste. Biomass, sewage sludge, organic waste, residual fractions and non-recyclable materials represent both one of the major challenges of our time and a valuable opportunity to build more sustainable, resilient and integrated energy systems.

These are the key topics that will be addressed at VENICE 2026 – 11th International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste, taking place from 23 to 25 November 2026 at the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. Promoted by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG) and organised with the support of Eurowaste, the Symposium will bring together researchers, industry professionals, companies, institutions and policymakers committed to advancing energy recovery solutions from biomass and waste.

International Call for Abstracts Reopens Until 3 September 2026

In preparation for the 2026 edition, the Call for Abstracts & Workshops has been extended until 3 September 2026, offering additional time to submit scientific contributions and workshop proposals on some of the most relevant topics in the field. The first submission phase has already confirmed the Symposium’s strong international appeal, with hundreds of contributions received from 32 countries. A Programme Preview, featuring the papers accepted so far, is already available on the official Venice Symposium website.

The call remains open to researchers, engineers, practitioners, companies and working groups interested in presenting research findings, practical experiences, technological applications and future perspectives.

Key Topics: Biomass, Waste-to-Energy Technologies and the Energy Transition

Submissions may cover the entire biomass and waste-to-energy value chain, including feedstocks, conversion technologies, energy outputs, regulatory frameworks, economic aspects, climate impacts, decision-support tools and communication strategies. The programme will include oral presentations, poster sessions and workshops designed not only to disseminate scientific results but also to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and international collaboration across academia, industry and public institutions.

The scientific programme will explore many of the key issues shaping the future of the sector, including anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, gasification, biogas, syngas, hydrogen, sustainable fuels, heat and power recovery, plant design, environmental policies, economic sustainability, climate impacts, digital tools and social acceptance.

The choice of Venice provides much more than a prestigious setting. The Symposium will be held in the historic Palazzo Dandolo, now part of the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal, just a short walk from St Mark’s Square. For three days, this internationally recognised venue will become a meeting point for scientific research, industry and public policy.

The previous edition confirmed the Venice Symposium’s role as one of the leading international forums dedicated to biomass and waste-to-energy, attracting delegates, speakers and scientific contributions from around the world. The 2026 edition aims to build on this success by providing a high-level platform for presenting innovative solutions, sharing research results and fostering new international partnerships.

For everyone working in the field of biomass and waste-to-energy, the reopening of the Call for Abstracts represents a valuable opportunity to showcase their work before an international scientific and professional audience and contribute to a programme that continues to grow with new ideas and perspectives.
