SGM: Innovation, Servitization, and Sustainability in Lubricant Logistics

Founded in 2011 as a trading company specializing in the import and distribution of lubricants, SGM has successfully transformed itself into an innovative business model based on servitization and process digitalization. Thanks to the forward-thinking vision of its founder, Vincenzo Mignano, the company has undergone a strategic evolution, becoming a benchmark in logistics and traceability with a strong commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.

From Importing to a Service Revolution

“Initially, we were simply importers and traders of lubricants, operating on a national and European scale with a traditional business model. However, in 2015, I noticed a lack of logistics services in Southern Italy, and that’s when the idea of creating an innovative, servitization-based model was born,” explains Mignano.

Thus, SGM developed an open-source structure that allows clients to access an ecosystem of assets and services—a groundbreaking approach in the industry. The turning point was the integration of regulatory and traceability tools, making the entire logistics process more efficient and secure.

Corporate Services and Technological Innovation

  • Advanced Logistics & Traceability:
    • SGM offers end-to-end logistics solutions, optimizing costs while managing regulatory and fiscal aspects.
    • Automation and traceability via RFID codes and IoT technologies.
    • Remote monitoring and purchase management.
    • The B4N* digital platform enables clients to join a structured network, accessing advanced logistics services by paying an entry fee and obtaining software licenses and access to the plant’s structural assets.
  • “ECO-B4N” Used Oil Monitoring System:
    • Smart, “active” storage containers for data collection and recovery optimization.
    • Digital integration with SGM’s proprietary software, “SGM ECOSYSTEM PROCESS 4.0.”
    • Recovery and repurposing of used oils as secondary raw materials.
  • Transformation & Production:
    • Patented cold-blending production process with zero emissions.
    • Scalable, automated production with digital monitoring.
    • Semi-automatic bottling with customizable formats (Europallet, Eurolarge Pallets, IBC 1000L).
    • The plant has a production capacity of ~30 m³/hour, while the bottling facility handles 6-7 m³/hour.
    • Sustainability & Third-Party Processing:
    • Customization and commercialization of sustainable products under partners’ brands.
    • Storage capacity of up to 50 m³ of bulk semi-finished products.
    • Bidirectional logistics and full traceability of flows.

Innovation & Patents: International Growth

SGM’s innovative drive has earned it major recognition. “After a long battle, we patented our technology first in Italy, then in the U.S., and after five years, in Europe,” says Mignano. The company’s system digitizes the entire lubricant management process, ensuring full traceability and regulatory compliance.

Sustainability & Circular Economy

Innovation didn’t stop at logistics. SGM has also invested in sustainability, developing systems and infrastructure for lubricant regeneration and used oil valorization. “We created a lab to identify and regenerate used oil, minimizing waste and promoting a circular economy model,” Mignano highlights.

Additionally, the company is launching new EcoLabel-certified product lines for public administrations and expanding into renewables and biodiesel. “We collaborate with municipalities and restaurants to collect used vegetable oils and convert them into biodiesel, supporting environmental sustainability.”

A Future of Continuous Expansion

SGM primarily operates in Puglia, Campania, Basilicata, and Lazio, with a strong European presence and a network of commercial partners. “We don’t seek a monopoly—just an efficient, structured network delivering innovative solutions globally,” Mignano clarifies.

On June 3, SGM will attend the “GOODS Environmental Sustainability – Sharing a Better Future” event in Barcelona to promote its ECO-B4N facility.

But SGM isn’t stopping there. Future plans include expansion into emerging markets and partnerships with NGOs and public administrations to develop sustainability and digitalization projects. “We have a clear vision, proven expertise, and a unique competitive edge. We’re ready to play our part on a global scale,” Mignano concludes with determination.
